It’s as simple as this. Pulled by
gravity, water flows downhill and, in the process, adapts itself to
whatever solid objects it encounters.
Built around this principle, a
fountain is an illusion of sorts. It emulates an outdoor
environment, including an endless flow of water coming from an
unseen source "upstream." Unlike in nature, however, the
water which just flowed by goes back upstream and flows by again and
again. (Maybe you can "step in the same river
twice!")
Within this self-contained,
closed-loop system, the fountain’s water is constantly
recirculated by a small, submersible
pump hidden "behind the
scenes." The pump pulls water from the receiving pool or
reservoir, carries it "uphill" (via a tube) to the fountain head, and gravity does the rest - again and again.
The fountain-maker crafts a miniature
environment through which the water can flow. The fountain piece is
the waterfall, sculpture, or spout from which the water emerges and
flows into
the reservoir. (To help you select, FountainFinder has organized
fountains by setting - Tabletop,
Floor, Wall,
Outdoor/Garden/Courtyard, or Waterfall.)
Because the water is recirculated,
the self-contained fountain doesn’t waste water. The only water
lost is through evaporation - which can be beneficial in humidifying the
air. Periodically, you simply replenish the water that has
evaporated. (Never let the pump run dry or you’ll ruin it.) Use
distilled water.
